Set WatchGuard XCSv As Email Relay For WHM/cPanel

Web hosting and email hosting often provided together. In Web Host Manager (WHM), administrators can choose between the Courier and Dovecot mail servers, both of which support POP3, IMAP, and SSL. For outgoing emails the SMTP server exim can be used. By default, WHM/cPanel would handle all emails though the built-in functionalities, however, a business who has a WatchGuard XCSv box should reconfigure the system to be able to receive and send emails through the advanced commercial product instead of the free product (spam filtering and other emailing features are available in cPanel/WHM). For this, the following steps are required:

  • Enable the traffic on the XCSv
  • Override global email sending in WHM
  • In Exim Configuration Manager, modify smarthost declaration to * a.b.c.d (a.b.c.d is the smarthost IP address)
  • In Exim Configuration Manager, enable “Send outgoing mail from the ip that matches the domain name in /etc/mailip”; save
  • In Exim Configuration Manager, enable “Reference /etc/mailips for outgoing SMTP connections”
  • From shell, add *: w.x.y.z (internal IP of the web server) to /etc/mailips, and restart the exim service
  • Under remote_smtp, remove the interface value, and add interface = a.b.c.d (smarthost IP); save file; restart exim
  • In Advanced Editor under Exim Configuration Manager in WHM, under section PREROUTERS, declare

special:
driver = manualroute
transport = remote_smtp
route_list = * w.x.y.z

where w.x.y.z is the internal IP of the cPanel server
