Cannot use CBT: Soap Fault Error In Veeam Backup & Replication


When VMware cannot track changed blocks, Veeam Backup & Replication processes the virtual machines without Changed Block Tracking (CBT) , and generates the Cannot use CBT: Soap fault. A specified parameter was not correct. error.

The job log states Soap fault. Error caused by file /vmfs/volumes/... and Failed to enumerate changed areas of the disk using CTK .

To resolve this issue, you have to reset CBT on the affected guest VMs as follows:

  1. Power off the VM
  2. Right click the VM, click Edit settings , and on the Options tab click Configuration Parameters

  3. Set the ctkEnabled value to false
  4. Set the scsi0:x.ctkEnabled value to false for each disk of the VM

    Reset CBT In VMware
  5. Browse the source directory, and remove any -CTK.VMDK files
  6. Power on the VM, and power it off again
  7. Set the scsi0:x.ctkEnabled value back to true for each disk of the VM
  8. Turn on the virtual machine
  9. Rerun Backup or Replication job to re-enable CBT
